Questions & Answers

Questions from League of Women Voters of California (4)

What policies or proposals would you support to reduce the number of people who are homeless and to prevent people from becoming homeless in California?
Answer from Joel Ventresca:

As the Governor of California, with a New Groundbreaking Equal-Opportunity-for-All-to-Succeed Platform (www.joelventresca.com), I will:

End homelessness, poverty, and economic inequality.

Enact free, universal, high-quality healthcare, education prekindergarten-through-college, childcare & job training fully-funded by wealthy individuals & corporations, government revenues, and high-income workers.

Raise minimum wage to $18.50-an-hour with no exceptions & annual upward cost-of-living adjustments (everyone who works full-time 40-hours-a-week will make over $38,000-a-year).

Launch a government-funded and government-directed massive relief program to provide decent shelter, food, and clothing to all 160,000 homeless individuals in California while providing targeted healthcare, treatment, assistance & services.

Place, with due process, homeless individuals who are a danger to themselves or others into a humane setting with appropriate monitoring & treatment.

Change state law to allow counties and cities to pass tenant protections & rent control to freeze or bring down rents.

Provide emergency financial help to tenants and homeowners facing eviction and foreclosure for up to three years.

Build large-scale multi-unit permanent affordable housing.

Eliminate taxes & fees on small businesses for five years.

Grow the economy by creating new jobs and building new public infrastructure.

What policies or proposals would you support to encourage and develop sources of electrical power that will reduce the release of carbon into the atmosphere while still being affordable for all residential consumers?
Answer from Joel Ventresca:

California, the most populous state in the nation with the 5th largest economy in the world, is not doing enough to slow down or stop global warming.

As a former City and County of San Francisco Environmental Commissioner and as governor of California, I will:

Reinvent California into the first zero-carbon-emissions state in the nation.

Restructure energy utilities into one full-service consumer-owned statewide public power system that operates efficiently, reliably, sustainably & safely with 15% lower rates.

Convert to non-nuclear 100% clean renewable energy.

Establish free public transit getting people out of cars and onto public transportation.

Complete the bullet train between Los Angeles and San Francisco getting people out of airplanes and onto trains.

Cease fracking & oil drilling.

Eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and gas-powered vehicles.

Promote the manufacturing of zero-emission electric vehicles in California to bring down costs.

Build large-scale solar & wind generation throughout the state.

Big Oil in California received 2,849 new fracking, oil & gas drilling permits between 2019 and 2021 while California is 60 years behind on its climate goals.

The California legislature has not passed a single significant climate change law in the last three years. The group California Environmental Voters assigned its first “D” grade to California for failure to address climate change in 2021.

What policies or proposals would you support to help those who have lost homes and jobs to wildfire?
Answer from Joel Ventresca:

Mismanaged California investor-owned utilities that cause wildfires must be held accountable and make their victims whole again economically.

For wildfire destruction not related to investor-owned utilities, California state government should financially assist those impacted by wildfires.

As governor, I will:

Restructure energy utilities into one full-service consumer-owned statewide public power system that operates efficiently, reliably, sustainably & safely with 15% lower rates.

Triple the wildfire workforce dedicated to fighting & containing wildfires.

Triple the resources dedicated to wildfire prevention.

California has some of the richest people in the country and some of the poorest. What policies or programs do you support to help those in the lower income categories in California?
Answer from Joel Ventresca:

The worst homelessness, poverty rate, and economic inequality in the nation is in California.

As governor, I will:

Launch a government-funded and government-directed massive relief program to provide decent shelter, food, and clothing to all 160,000 homeless individuals in California while providing targeted healthcare, treatment, assistance & services.

End poverty by changing law, regulation, and policy to move every household and family above the poverty level.

Disempower the top 1% economic elite.

Increase taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations.

Reduce the gap between the rich and the poor.

Enact free, universal, high-quality healthcare, education prekindergarten-through-college, childcare & job training fully-funded by wealthy individuals & corporations, government revenues, and high-income workers.

Raise minimum wage to $18.50-an-hour with no exceptions & annual upward cost-of-living adjustments.
