I am a college professor committed to grassroots organizing and capacity building around the issues of education, labor, women’s reproductive health and political empowerment. I am a former middle school teacher with the Compton Unified School District and am currently employed at Cal State Los Angeles as an instructor and Clinical Field Supervisor with the Cal State TEACH teacher preparation program where I support new teachers and pre-service candidates in obtaining the multiple subjects teaching credential. As a teacher of teachers, I am an advocate for public education; K-12 through higher ed and am guided by the desire to be the voice of the under-represented, a willingness to stand strong for what I believe in and a passion for defending worker’s rights, I am actively involved with labor; having served as Faculty Rights Chair and currently serving as chapter Vice President and Political Action Chair for California Faculty Association – LA and member of the statewide Representation and Bargaining Teams. I have lobbied with the CA State Assembly and Senate for tenure density and diversity in hiring for CSU faculty and increased funding for higher education. In 2016, I was recognized as CFA Lecturer of the Year.
A love of politics and labor activism led me to the LA Federation of Labor’s Civic Leadership Academy (2018), the Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute (2018) and Emerge CA (2015) political training programs where I honed my organizational skillset and broadened my network of like-minded activists. I am a member of the New Frontier, Muslim and Beach Cities Democratic Clubs and was first elected to the LACDP to represent Assembly District 66 in 2016. I serve on the Resolutions Committee where I review resolutions that shape public policy and support the values of equity and democracy and in leadership as a co-Chair of the Credential's Committee. In 2018, I was honored as LACDP female Democrat of the year and by Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi as a Woman of Distinction.
I am the outgoing 1st Vice President of the Los Angeles African American Women PAC (LAAAWPAC) where I chair the Political Involvement Committee. I am a member of the Los Angeles County Voter Services Committee where I problem solve ways to increase voter participation and raise awareness of issues that impact communities of color through education and civic engagement.
I am the oldest of three children, born and raised in the unincorporated Athens area of Los Angeles County. My father retired from both the Los Angeles County ISD and the Los Angeles City Fire Department after 40+ years of service. My mother, deceased in 2017, was an LVN with Hollywood Presbyterian/Queen of Angeles Hospital in Los Angeles. I attended St. Mary’s Academy in Inglewood, CA, is a graduate of Cal State University Los Angeles (BA) and Chapman University (MA) and am a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
