Dawn Addis is a City Councilmember, teacher, and mom, with a 20-year record of leadership in our Central Coast communities. Dawn is the Democratic Party endorsed candidate in this Assembly race.

As a Morro Bay Councilmember, Dawn has worked to promote economic development, improve local infrastructure, and protect the things that make the Central Coast such a special place to live. Her long record of community involvement includes co-founding the Women’s March in San Luis Obispo (WMSLO), which drew a crowd of around 10,000 people in 2017 and has since grown into a successful nonprofit organization.

Professionally, Dawn has served as a classroom teacher and educational program developer. She has worked for the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, the largest Unified School District in the 30th Assembly District, since 2001. Dawn holds a bachelor’s degree in art education and Spanish and a master’s in special education from San Francisco State University. She also holds four different teaching credentials.

Dawn was named the 2017 “Woman of the Year” for the 24th Congressional District, as a result of her public advocacy efforts. Dawn is also an active member of the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club.

Dawn and her husband, Marcus, are the proud parents of two sons.

I'm a lifelong public servant who has worked as a firefighter, 9-1-1 emergency dispatcher, and police officer in Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Luis Obispo Counties. After experiencing a career-ending injury serving a search warrant on a drug manufacturing case, I transitioned into public policy, first serving on the Monterey County Planning Commission and then getting elected to the Seaside City Council. In addition to city council, I also currently serve as the chairperson of the Housing Authority of the County of Monterey and as a member of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments. In addition to public policy, I worked for Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay, which builds homes in the northern part of the district; however, due to the pandemic, I left that job and accepted a position with the Campaign for Fair Housing Elements as the policy director. There, I oversee the campaign’s work to empower community members and shape local housing elements to ensure cities and counties are planning for adequate housing in their communities. I live in Seaside with my fiancée Jessica who is a nurse manager and an elected trustee of the local school board, as well as my two soon-to-be stepsons who attend local public schools.

My political philisophy is simple: Do the most amount of good for the most amount of people. It is always my goal to create opportunities, reduce hardship, and repair past harm, ultimately working toward a more fair, just, and equitable society.
