Supervisor, Supervisorial District 1 — San Luis Obispo County

I am life-long resident of the North County. I have lived in Paso Robles for 43 years.

I have a long, productive history in local government. I served on the Paso Robles City Council from 1987 to 1996 and as Mayor from 1988 to 1990. More recently I was elected again to the Paso Robles City Council in 2012 with the largest number of votes and then ran unopposed for Mayor in 2014. As Mayor and on the Council I have focused on maintaining and enhancing the city’s water resources, restoring and improving local government services and bringing head of household jobs to the community and the North County.

I have been active in many local service organizations over the years including Kiwanis, Optimists, Rotary and the American Cancer Society, The Link and the Symphony of the Vines. I have also worked with Main Street and other organizations in Paso Robles and neighboring Atascadero. In 2007 I received the Atascadero Chamber award for Community Volunteer of the Year. Opportunities to participate in two cities and at the County level have given me unique perspectives on how communities can and should work together.

It is my philosophy that County Government should operate in a non-partisan fashion to plan and implement the goals and services desired by its citizens, interface with State and Federal funding and legislative offices and provide a platform for civil discourse during public debate over vital issues. Supervisors must exercise mutual respect while discussing matters of public safety, funding, staffing, infrastructure, economic development and homelessness among others. Maximum effort must be afforded for constructive citizen input during consideration of prioritized issues. County staff must receive clear, non-contradictory direction regarding work plans, allocation of resources and accountability. All public finances must be handled with complete transparency, always with the intent to invest public funds frugally, effectively and efficiently. Supervisors must be open to constituent input and also provide a conduit for public input upwards through the layers of State and Federal government so that local concerns and attitudes are reflected in legislation which, ultimately, affects the people of San Luis Obispo County.
