My Top 3 Priorities

  • Developing safe, supportive, and equitable schools for all of our students.
  • Raise salaries and support for staff and address housing crisis.
  • All of our schools must have relevant and engaging 21st century learning that prepares all of our students for a college and/or career.

Stanford Juris Doctor (current)
University of California, Berkeley Bachelor of Arts (current)

I currently serve as the President of the San Francisco Board of Education. I was elected to the school board in January 2013. I previously served as Vice-President of the Board of Education, Chair of the Curriculum and Program Committee, Chair of the Rules, Policy and Legislation Committee, and currently serves as Chair of Ad Hoc Committee on Student Assignment and Chair of Joint Committee on School District/City College.

In my role on the Board, I have worked to make San Francisco schools safe, supportive, and equitable, to enhance relevant and engaging 21st century learning opportunities, to build a healthy, sustainable, student centered school district, and to support and empower our educators, students, and families.

I am the Director of Policy and Co-Founder at The Dream Corps, a nonprofit founded and led by Van Jones, where I lead policy advocacy for #cut50, an initiative to cut the prison population in half in ten years, and #YesWeCode, an initiative to create a pipeline for 100,000 low opportunity youth to become the best coders, computer engineers and designers in the world. I am also a former Education Fellow and current Adjunct Faculty Member at the Stanford, where I used design thinking and human centered design to incubate new ideas in education relating to student voice and student engagement.

As the former Executive Director of the University of California Student Association, I worked directly for the 200,000 students in the UC system, fighting to ensure public education is protected for current and future generations, including helping win the California DREAM Act and a 6 year tuition freeze for UC students.

I hold a BA from UC Berkeley, an MA from Stanford University School of Education; a JD from Stanford Law School with a focus on education law; and an LLM in Human Rights from National University of Ireland where I was a Senator George Mitchell Scholar.
