Biography

Brian Dahle has served in the California Legislature since 2012, when he was elected to represent California's 1st Assembly District.  He won a special election to the California Senate in 2019.

In the Legislature, he has worked on a bipartisan basis to promote wildfire safety and forest health, protect rural healthcare, and expand broadband availability for unserved communities, and build new water storage. He supports lower taxes and reducing the countless regulations that make living and doing business in California so expensive.

Before winning election to the Legislature, Brian served four terms on the Lassen County Board of Supervisors, was a member of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy's board.  He also served as the chair of the National Association of Counties' Western Interstate Region and of the Regional Council of Rural Counties.

He still runs his family farm and a seed and trucking business in Lassen County.

Questions & Answers

Questions from League of Women Voters of California (4)

What policies or proposals would you support to reduce the number of people who are homeless and to prevent people from becoming homeless in California?
Answer from Brian Dahle:

California has by every measure a severe housing shortage, and state regulations make it far too difficult and expensive to add to our housing stock.  We must streamline development to allow new housing -- both market-rate and affordable.

We need to consolidate and streamline the funding that subsidizes housing for needy Californians.

Many of the chronically homeless suffer from addiction, but the state has stopped funding transitional housing that requires sobriety.  We must create environments that help people overcome their addictions if we want them to live healthy and productive lives.

What policies or proposals would you support to encourage and develop sources of electrical power that will reduce the release of carbon into the atmosphere while still being affordable for all residential consumers?
Answer from Brian Dahle:

I have long been a champion of using biomass power plants throughout California to reduce the excess forest fuels that feed catastrophic wildfires while generating renewable electricity.

What policies or proposals would you support to help those who have lost homes and jobs to wildfire?
Answer from Brian Dahle:
I represent a region of California that has seen some of the heaviest impacts from wildfires, which in multiple cases have leveled whole communities. Rebuilding takes time. Unfortunately, we have a lot of money in federal emergency relief after disasters, but too often complex regulations mean those who've lost their homes to not get the help they need to rebuild if they are under-insured or uninsured. The state needs to work with FEMA to find ways to put our resources to more effective use. More important, we need to be aggressive about reducing forest fuels and keeping communities safer in the first place. I've been advocating for more aggressive work to reduce wildfire risk since before I was elected to the Legislature. The state is finally catching up thanks to the hard experience of the past few years, but we have a lot more work to do to turn the state's promises into effective results on the ground.
California has some of the richest people in the country and some of the poorest. What policies or programs do you support to help those in the lower income categories in California?
Answer from Brian Dahle:

California has the nation's highest fuel prices, out-of-control housing costs, and utility rates near double any neighboring state's --- in large part thanks to state policies.  And the cost of living squeezes poorer Californians the most, often simply sending them out of state.

The best way to help low-income Califrornians is to focus policies on reducing the cost of living, and that will be a top priority for my administration.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

The basic functions of government --- public safety, education, roads --- are vital to society and must be done well.  But our state government has taken on far more than it can effectively manage and we're all suffering under the bureaucracy that has created.

Decisions should be made as close as possible to the people affected.  I believe in local control and the importance of our local govenments, including counties and school districts whose leaders are elected by their communities.

Taxes should be lower.  It is the people's money, and when the state government is running an enormous supplus as it is now, we should be cutting taxes and letting Californians keep their money for their own families.

I believe in accountability for crime.  For the past decade, California has been telling more and more criminals that their actions have no consequences.  This has having terrible effects on families, neighborhoods and businesses.
