This Measure has been placed on the ballot by the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors. Measure G proposes an increase in the Calaveras County Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT), and if approved, would increase the TOT from 6% to 12%. A TOT is a tax on guests staying in hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, vacation rentals, and similar overnight stay establishments. TOT revenue is discretionary and deposited into the County General Fund for unrestricted use. Historically, the Board of Supervisors has allocated TOT revenue to road repairs, to the Calaveras Visitors Bureau, to the fire districts, and to the Sheriff’s Office. Pursuant to Revenue and Taxation Code § 7280, which authorizes imposition of a TOT, the tax applies in unincorporated areas of the County only. The County TOT was last increased in 1974, at which time it was raised from 4% to 6%. A “no” vote on this Measure is a vote against increasing the TOT in the unincorporated areas of Calaveras County from 6% to 12%. If this Measure fails, the existing TOT will be unaffected and will remain at the current rate of 6%.
The TOT is used to enhance emergency response programs and safety services, road improvements and repairs, and encourage tourism, agriculture, and economic development in the county by supporting the Calaveras Visitors Bureau.
