I am a small business owner. I own an insurance and financial services agency here in San Jose. I served on the Saratoga City Council for 8 years and had 2 terms as mayor. I was a very active participant in the League of California Cities, serving as the President and officer of the Peninsula Division for 4 years and as Chair and member of the Environmental Policy Committee for 7 years. I have a B.S. degree in Mathematics and Business Administration. I started my career as a programmer for IBM (now I guess it would be called software developer). I advanced into the technical side of sales and management. I held executive positions at IBM, Microsoft and then several smaller computer sales companies where I built service organizations. I started pursuing a passion of mine - helping people - a long time ago, and it's progressed into my current business ownership position.

My Top 3 Priorities
- Economy/Jobs - California has been hurt by governmental rules and regulations that make it very difficult for businesses to succeed here. I have a small business and feel the pain every day. I'd like to hire more people so that I can grow, but ever
- California's Debt - Real pension reform still needs to happen in the State of California. Small steps have been taken, but it's still unsustainable when CALPERS is still providing opportunities for workers to pad their income to get larger pensions
- Education - Our education system is in sore need of help. I would love a California that doesn't have an elected politician as our Superintendent of Schools. We need to ensure that a focus is provided to getting children at a young age AND THEIR PA

Political Philosophy
I can best be described as a fiscally conservative, socially responsible person. I believe that straight talk is better than political mumbo-jumbo and I am always completely honest. I don't believe in putting down my opponents - if they've got to resort to those tactics, I guess they are afraid of something or incredibly insecure. I believe that California's politicians need to put party aside and start making decisions as Californians - every decision needs to be about people, not party! I have worked together with members of all parties and know that the only way to make sure that the best decisions are made is to listen responsibly, respond tactfully and act appropriately.

Questions & Answers
Questions from The League of Women Voters of California Education Fund and California Counts, a public media collaboration. (6)
We as state leaders need to act where we can and also put pressure on federal leaders to stop diverting millions of gallons of freshwater into the sea to protect a tiny fish called the delta smelt. That water should be used for agriculture and treated so it can be delivered to homes as drinking water. It is unfair that Californians are asked to conserve water and pay higher rates when millions of gallons of good water are wasted in such a manner.
We should invest in better water storage projects, as well as look into reusing recycled water. Special care and oversight must be taken when dealing with recycled water to ensure contaminated water isn't delivered as drinking water.
Finally, we should invest in desalination. A coastal state experiencing a prolonged drought is a sign of failed leadership. We have an ocean full of water than we can access by removing its salt.
In 2012, we had a campaign finance initiative called Prop 32 on the ballot that most state Democrats opposed. It would have prohibited both corporations and unions from giving money to elected officials as well as prohibited automatically taking money from your paycheck to fund political campaigns. Something similar is needed.
I oppose raising the state minimum wage any further. The cost of living varies so much in different parts of the state that a one size fits all approach is unwise. Businesses will have to lay off employees, reduce employee hours, and increase prices on consumers to compensate for thier higher payroll costs. Businesses are fleeing our state in droves because we have made it so expensive to do business in California. We need to stop the bleeding of businesses and the jobs they provide.
See my response to Question 3 for my alternative plan to raising the minimum wage.
I will look at our spending habits and work to make serious cuts. We can especially look at our pension obligations and enact statewide pension reform similar to what was done in San Jose, as well as look to reform drug policy and criminal justice policy to stop spending more money on incarceration than education.
I pledge to vote against any unbalanced budget.
I pledge to vote against all tax and fee increases. California is the highest taxed state in the nation. If other states can balance their budgets without having nearly as high taxes, so can we. Santa Clara County's working families already send more than our fair share to Sacaramento. It's time Sacramento politicians learn to be better stewards of our hard-earned money.
We need to expand California's Earned Income Tax Credit. Right now, the state EITC is very modest at best. Taking into account the cost of living in the taxpayer's area compared to their income and family size when determining the amount of the refund they receive is also a good idea.
I also believe that we need to presereve our currnet affordable housing options, especially mobile home parks. San Jose has one of the highest number of mobile home parks for a large city in the nation. Developers are looking to buy up these properties to convert them to more expensive apartments and condos. We need to preserve them.
Expanding VTA Light Rail to South County, the Evergreen area of San Jose, Los Gatos, and Palo Alto should be considered. There should also be Light Rail or Bus Rapid Transit along the Alum Rock-Santa Clara-Alameda-El Camino as well as the San Carlos-Stevens Creek corridors. More express, rapid, and limited stop service is needed to cut down on long travel times that dissuade people from taking transit. Timed transfers should be implemented to improve ease of use of the system. Finally, residential areas need better service. If people don't have reliable service near their homes, they won't ride.
Making our core bus routes and Light Rail operate 24/7 is also a good idea. People won't ride if service isn't reliable at all hours, and this will also cut back on drunk driving. VTA is currently testing an on-demand transit option called FLEX. This can be used to fill in transit gaps in more remote areas where regular fixed route service during non-peak times is not feasible.
Ridesharing must also be protected. There have been a lot of attacks on Uber, Lyft, and other popular ridesharing services. These services can also fill transit gaps and provide more affordable transportation options. The competition they generate both amongst themselves and with the taxi industry lowers costs and increases quality of service for riders.

FISCAL VIEWS:
I am a staunch fiscal conservative. I will vote against all unbalanced budgets, vote against all tax and fee increases, and work to make sure we do not spend more than our revenues. I will work to cut taxes and burdensome regulations on job creators to improve our business climate, which is currently one of the worst in the nation. I support tort reform. I support pension reform. I will vote against any proposals to weaken Prop 13's caps on property taxes. Santa Clara County's working families already send more than our fair share to Sacaramento. It's time Sacramento politicians learn to be better stewards of our hard-earned money.
SOCIAL VIEWS:
I am a strong believer in individual liberty. I believe the government should not control what you choose to eat, drink, smoke, whom you choose to marry, etc. I support civil asset forfeiture reform, community policing and use of force reform, sentencing reform, and ending the failed War on Drugs. I support removing Prop 8 from the California Constitution. I am staunchly pro-life. I have received A ratings from various 2nd Amendment groups, because I will always defend the 2nd Amendment. I am supporting efforts to legalize marijuana and decriminalize addiction in California. I oppose affirmative action (SCA 5) because it is racist. I oppose SB 277 and support parental rights. I support making legal immigration simpler and easier. I support a secure border and absolutely no amnesty.
EDUCATION VIEWS:
I will work to get rid of Common Core, move away from standarized testing and one-size-fits-all standards, and work to give more control over education to local parents and local school boards. I will work to enact teacher tenure reform so underperforming taeachers can be held accountable and be replaced if necessary. I am a strong supporter of charter schools, home schooling, and financial aid for needy families to attend private K-12 schools. I will work to make vocational education and option in our high schools to prepare graduates for the job market. I support bilingual education so our graduates can be more competitve in today's global economy.
