I worked as a design engineer, sales engineer and field support engineer for 20 years before retiring to become a math teacher. I taught in NUSD for 12 years, and retired from that field last year. During my time in NUSD, I sat on the Budget Advisory Committee and the Natomas Schools Foundation. I was on the bargaining team and was President of the teacher's union during our budget crisis when we faced state receivership. I sat on the Zero-Based Budgeting commitee headed by General Davie and helped resurrect our budget and avoid receivership. I taught and guided almost 2000 of our students through their math challenges and successes, and developed solid relationships with both students and parents. I am proud of the work I've done and the relationships I've created in Natomas. I am experienced with LCFF, the LCAP and our budget, internal NUSD policies and processes, and the current district vision and goals. I'm also very familiar with how the system works and, more importantly, doesn't work in the trenches at our school sites, and have the drive, enthusiasm and commitment to look into all aspects of the district in order to improve outcomes for our students.

Political Philosophy

I have lived in Natomas since 2000 and taught in our neighborhood schools for 12 years until retiring last year. As an executive board member of the teachers' union l learned how important it is that our district administration be willing to engage families and teachers for student success. As a member of the Budget Advisory Committee, I learned firsthand how Natomas' resources are allocated, and how important transparency is for our community.

Nobody knows better than parents what their kids need. And nobody works harder than teachers to prepare our students to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Things need improving. But we can't improve our schools if parents, teachers and classified staff don't have a seat at the table where the decisions are made. As your school board member, I will build a team to make partnership, not politics, a priority. I will bring people together, not pull them apart - teachers, classified, students, parents, administrators and the school board. We need a school board that respects employees and parents, and works with them in partnership to make decisions about our schools. I know that we need cooperation, not conflict, to meet the challenges ahead.
